Tattoo Maintenance 101
After getting a tattoo, it's important to take proper care of it to ensure that it heals properly. At Forbidden Ink Studio, we provide all of our clients with detailed aftercare instructions to help you through the healing process. Our artists will go over these instructions with you before you leave the studio, and we encourage you to ask any questions you may have. Remember, caring for your tattoo is an important part of ensuring that it looks great for years to come.
The Healing Process
The healing process for a tattoo can vary depending on a number of factors, including the size and location of the tattoo, as well as your body's natural healing process. Generally, it takes around 2-3 weeks for a tattoo to fully heal. During this time, it's important to keep the area clean and moisturised, and to avoid exposing it to direct sunlight or soaking it in water. If you experience any unusual symptoms during the healing process, such as excessive redness or swelling, be sure to contact us right away.
Special Considerations
If you have any special medical conditions or allergies, please let us know before getting your tattoo. This will help us to ensure that we are using the right materials and techniques to keep you safe and comfortable. Additionally, if you have any specific design ideas or requests, our artists are always happy to work with you to create a custom tattoo that is truly one-of-a-kind.
Dos & Donts of Tattoo Aftercare
Dos
Follow Your Tattoo Artist's Instructions: Your tattoo artist knows best, so follow their aftercare instructions carefully.
Keep it Clean: Gently wash your tattoo with a mild, fragrance-free soap and lukewarm water, then pat it dry with a clean towel.
Moisturise: Apply a thin layer of tattoo-specific ointment or unscented, alcohol-free lotion to keep the tattooed area moisturised.
Protect from the Sun: Keep your tattoo covered or apply sunscreen (SPF 30 or higher) when going out in the sun, even after it's healed.
Wear Loose Clothing: Opt for loose, breathable clothing to prevent irritation and allow your tattoo to breathe.
Sleep Carefully: Avoid sleeping on your new tattoo to prevent friction and irritation.
Be Gentle: Avoid scratching, picking, or rubbing your tattoo; let it heal naturally.
Be Patient: Healing time varies, so give your tattoo ample time to heal completely before exposing it to excessive moisture or friction.
Donts
Don't Soak or Submerge: Avoid swimming, hot tubs, saunas, and baths until your tattoo is fully healed.
Don't Over-Moisturise: Applying too much ointment or lotion can suffocate the tattoo and hinder the healing process.
Don't Pick at Scabs: Let scabs and flakes fall off naturally; picking can lead to scarring and ink loss.
Don't Overexpose to Water: While cleaning is important, avoid prolonged exposure to water, especially hot water.
Don't Use Harsh Products: Avoid using harsh soaps, exfoliants, or products with fragrances, alcohol, or chemicals on your healing tattoo.
Don't Wear Tight Clothing: Tight clothing can cause friction and irritation on the healing tattoo.
Don't Overexpose to Sunlight: UV rays can fade your tattoo, so avoid prolonged sun exposure, especially during the initial healing period.
Don't Rush Healing: Avoid exposing your tattoo to activities that might cause friction or damage until it's fully healed.
